ABOUT THE SHOW - Thematic Overview & Guiding Words
The “I’M SCARED” exhibition series was born out of the questions:
What does it truly mean to be scared? What are the shadows that haunt your thoughts? What are the things that keep you awake at night, and what should we genuinely fear? How do you go about creating and displaying "scary” artwork, how do you create space for it?
These guiding questions brought the first show to light in 2024, expanding for a second year in 2025 with “I’M SCARED TOO,” returning for a third year with “I’M SCARED 2026”. We invite artists to join us on this journey into the known and unknown.
The I’M SCARED team found it easiest to describe what we’re looking for in the series of words below, do your piece(s) evoke these words?
Shadow, Sorcery, Dystopian, Witchcraft, Blood, Evil, Haunting, Wicked, Darkness, Doom, Nightmare, Ghostly, Foreboding, Sinister, Ominous, Unsettling, Chilling, Creepy, Dark, Twisted, Dread, Grim, Disturbing, Bleak, Grotesque, Isolated, Veiled, Phantom, Gruesome, Gory, Shocking, Monstrous, Uneasy, Disgust, Vile, Death, Lurking, Murky, Freaky, Dirty, Fearful, Eerie, Complicated, Complex, Spindle, Shame, Paranoia, Sonder, Gut-punch, Peripheral, Mold, Gouge, Piercing, Wretched, Morbid Curiosities, Oddities.
What kind of work are we looking for? 2D Works, 3D Works/Sculpture, Music/Soundscapes, & Film.
Work Restrictions/Guidelines:
2D Work must be wired and ready to hang on our hook-based hanging system (STAS).
Music/Sound and 3D Work 360º/Film (Video) submissions must be under 5 minutes in length.
3D Work shall not be over 6.5' in height.
Hand Delivery of Work: Artist must be able to hand deliver their work to Bethany Arts Community within the artwork drop-off period, artist must also be able to pick-up their work (if unsold) during the pick-up period (both below).
BAC Commission: Artist agrees to let BAC keep 20% of artwork sale price.
